In spite of a few delays, work is coming along on the sleek new bridge that will replace the Sixth Street Viaduct. As the project moves forward, so do plans for a public park (or PARC) that will be constructed beneath the bridge on both sides of the LA River.

City officials are now beginning the environmental review process for the park portion of the project, which is also being overseen by bridge architect Michael Maltzan. The Bureau of Engineering has released an initial study of the project for public review and comment.

As a recent presentation on the project details, officials are currently considering three distinct options for the park’s design.

The first is a promenade concept, which would arrange the park along long and direct pathways with trees and gardens neatly arranged alongside.

The second is a “canopy and objects design” that would allow visitors to meander through winding pathways and less orderly vegetation.

Finally, the third concept is an episodic design in which the park’s various attractions would be well delineated and arranged one after the other.

All three designs would feature a long list of park features, including athletic fields, playground and fitness equipment, walking and bike paths, a public art and performance area, a dog park area, and a community building.

Park planners are still gathering community feedback on the project, so if you’re a community member with particularly strong opinions on any of these designs, feel free to fill out this survey. Additionally, a public scoping meeting on the project is planned for May 3 between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Puente Learning Center in Boyle Heights.
